Note: An additional Public Information Meeting will be held on Monday, August 31, 2015; the meeting will be a repeat of this August 3rd meeting and will provide an additional opportunity to learn about the proposed Standards and offer input. The August 31st meeting will be from 6:00-7:15pm in the Council Chamber at Town Hall.

What are Neighborhood Character Standards (NCS)? These are a zoning tool that can be used to protect the character of a neighborhood and also allow flexibility, room for reinvestment, and change that is compatible with surrounding structures/homes. These standards are contextual – For example, when new construction or an addition is proposed, the applicant must demonstrate that the new construction/addition is compatible with the surrounding homes.

The Standards can be found on the Town’s website by clicking here. This effort is a part of the Land Use Management Ordinance update – for more information, click here.

How do these Standards relate to Historic Districts? Staff is currently recommending that these Standards apply to the local Historic Districts as a pilot program, in addition to the existing regulations. These Standards could help Town staff and the Historic District Commission when reviewing applications for new development or additions.

Share your thoughts! The Town is using a web-based tool called OpenComment (https://codestudio.opencomment.us/lumo-topics) to gather feedback on the draft Standards and other topics related to the LUMO update. Please share your feedback and thoughts!
