The Old Chapel Hill Cemetery (circa 1798) is on 6.98 acres located near the corner of Country Club and South Roads, on the main campus of UNC. The cemetery is recognized by the National Register of Historic Places and is owned and maintained by the Town of Chapel Hill.
The Old Chapel Hill Cemetery Task Force was appointed by the Council in January 2004 to provide recommendations for improvements to the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery. Improvements completed to date include tree plantings, stone gutter construction, installation of pedestrian level lighting, and prioritized marker restoration and repair. Archival research and documentation and development of a public information web site were completed with assistance from a graduate student from the UNC School of Information and Library Science. Other improvements that are on-going or in planning stages include straightening and resetting leaning markers and repairs to cast iron fences, as well as signage and informational displays.
