In Orange and Durham Counties, information on land, buildings, other real estate and motor vehicles registered in North Carolina is kept by the county tax office and automatically billed for property tax purposes. This information is available on the county website.
Residents are required to report to the county tax office by January 31 each year their taxable personal property (such as boats, business equipment, etc.) Motor vehicles need not be reported to the County for property tax purposes if already registered with the State. A resident of North Carolina who owns a motor vehicle here is required to register the vehicle with the NC Division of Motor Vehicles and to pay Town and County taxes on the vehicle.
Property taxes on real estate and certain personal property other than motor vehicles are billed in the summer each year and include Town of Chapel Hill taxes, County taxes and, for residents of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school district in southeast Orange County, a supplemental School District tax. Property taxes must be paid by January 5th to avoid penalties.
Property taxes and the Town’s license taxes on vehicles are billed by the Department of Motor Vehicles at the same time as the renewal of State vehicle registration.
Orange County residents may pay real property tax bills in person at the Revenue Office on the bottom floor of the Chapel Hill Town Hall (405 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.) or in person at the Orange County Tax Office located in the Gateway Center in downtown Hillsborough.
Taxes for Chapel Hill residents in Durham County may be paid by mail to the Durham Tax Collection Office, 200 East Main Street, Durham (919-560-0300) or in person at the Durham County Tax Office in Durham.
Property taxes are collected for the Town's service year beginning on July 1. For example, the Town property taxes billed in the summer of 2022 to be paid by January 5, 2023, will pay for services from July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023 (the 2022-2023 service year).
The Town of Chapel Hill property tax rate for the 2022-2023 service year is 52.2 cents per $100 of taxable value.
How to estimate your Tax Bill for the 2022-2023 service year
To estimate your Town of Chapel Hill tax for the General Fund (which supports several basic services including police and fire protection, sanitation and street maintenance), Debt Fund, and Transportation Fund (for public transit services), multiply your taxable property value as set by the County tax office by 0.00522.
Taxable value | multiplied by Town tax rate for General and Transportation Funds (service year starting on July 1, 2023) |
equals Town property tax |
---|---|---|
$200,000 | 52.2 cents per $100 of value (or 0.00522) (e.g. 200,000 x 0.00522) |
$1,044 |
$300,000 | $1,566 |
Property owners in the downtown Chapel Hill service district, which receive supplemental services, pay a supplemental property tax of 6.4 cents per $100 of value for the service year starting on July 1, 2022.
For more information on how taxable values are set, please call Orange County Tax Administration at 919-245-2100. Durham residents may call the Durham County Tax Office at 919-560-0350.
