Adopt a Park / Greenway Program
The Adopt A Park/Greenway program is a collaborative effort between the Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department and the Chapel Hill volunteer community that will enhance the appearance of Town Parks and Greenways.
The Parks and Recreation Department works closely with volunteer teams and individuals to ensure that projects in the Town parks and greenways such as litter and recycling pick up, natural surface trail clearing, graffiti removal or painting would be completed in a timely and efficient basis.

- Service Organizations
- Neighborhood Associations
- Scout Troops
- Church Groups
- Fraternal and Campus Organizations
- Local Business and Professional Organizations
What does volunteering offer a team when adopting a park or greenway?
Growing their team through community service, Enhancing the Town’s Parks and Greenway promotes pride, Helping to raise the quality and appearance of the Parks and Greenways.
What is the time commitment?
The adopter must be willing to make a minimum 1-year commitment to their designated park or trail completing 4-6 projects per year. The Department has developed a list to identify available projects for large and small volunteer groups that would help enhance and maintain Parks and Greenways through:
- General cleanup efforts
- Beautification
- Tree and ornamental plantings
- Weeding of landscaped areas
- Painting
- Etc.
Resources that the Department would provide:
CHPR will provide trash and recycling bags, recycling information, safety guidelines and litter grabbers. Adoptees can check out safety vests and work gloves with a $50 refundable deposit. This deposit may be waived if a written request is received 14 days prior to the scheduled project date and approved by the director of DPR or her designee.

How are adoptions recognized?
Recognition will be provided with Signs within the project area with the name of the volunteer group,
a Letter of commendation from Director of Parks and Recreation Department and Recognition on the
Parks and Recreation Website.
