The Chapel Hill Police Department Records Division is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM until 5:00 PM, except Town holidays. The staff is also available to help you by phone at 919-968-2760. The fax number is 919-968-2846.

CRASH, INCIDENT, AND ARREST REPORTS 

Please visit https://p2c.chpd.us/  for free public copies of crash, incident, and arrest reports. Public copies of reports may also be requested online here.

FINGERPRINTING

Fingerprinting is available for the following services only:  

  • ABC Business Permit Applicants 

  • Public Housing Applicants 

  • Town of Chapel Hill Employment Applicants 

  • Taxi Franchise/Driver Applicants 

  • Precious Metal Business Applicants 

Fingerprinting is done by appointment only. Please call 919-968-2760 to schedule an appointment. The Chapel Hill Police Department is not a designated fingerprinting agency for the Immigration and Naturalization service, (INS). For further information please call 1-800-375-5283. Fee information can be found here.  

LOCAL ARREST RECORDS CHECK

Local Arrest Records Checks contain only arrests by the Chapel Hill Police Department, within the Town limits. Please complete this form and bring to the police department. Fee information can be found here. For a record check that covers all of Orange County, including Chapel Hill, please contact the Orange County Clerk of Court at (919) 644-4500.  

HOUSE CHECK REQUEST FORM

The House Check program allows officers to drive by your home, when you are away, and look at doors and windows to ensure all entries appear secured and untouched. The program is available to residential locations within the Town of Chapel Hill jurisdiction. Officers may look for other irregularities on your property (examples include damage to property, leaky pipes), but cannot guarantee all irregularities are found. Officers will not enter your home without signs that your home is unsecured. Officers will not water your lawn, cut your grass, or feed your animals. To request a house check, please fill out the online form found here – https://townofchapelhill.policetocitizen.com/Home. You can also complete this form and return by email to Records-Police@townofchapelhill.org, by fax, or at the police department. This form requires a witness signature. There is no fee for this service.  

NOISE PERMIT APPLICATION

Permits are required for events where amplified music will be played to exceed permitted decibel level. Permits must be obtained seven days prior to the event and are issued only for Friday and Saturday nights. The Noise Permit Application can be found here. Please submit the completed application by email to Records-Police@townofchapelhill.org by fax, or in person at the police department. You will be contacted to pay the fee if the permit is approved and issued. Fee information can be found here. Note: some events require an outdoor event permit issued by the Town of Chapel Hill's Community Arts & Culture division. Click here for more information.

PERMIT TO SOLICIT OR SELL 

Individuals going door to door to sell goods or services are required to have a Permit to Solicit or Sell issued by the Town of Chapel Hill.  The application can be found here.  Please bring the completed application and valid photo identification to the police department. Fee information can be found here. Non-Profit Organizations are not required to have permits but must be registered with the State of North Carolina as Non-Profit

TAXI DRIVER AND TAXI FRANCHISE PERMITS

 

The Town of Chapel Hill requires both taxi drivers and taxi companies to be permitted to operate within town limits. Click here for the Taxi Franchise and Taxi Driver Permit Application. This applications require notarization. Please bring completed applications, with supporting documents and valid identification, to the police department. Fee information can be found here.   

NC DRIVING HISTORY AND CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKS 

 

NC Driving History and Criminal History Checks are available only to attorneys with active cases. The Defense Attorney Access Form from the SBI can be found here. Forms must be completed and notarized and brought to the police department. Fee information can be found here.  

PROPERTY RETRIEVAL

 

If you have been instructed by a police officer to retrieve property or evidence, you must make an appointment by calling 919-968-2760. Please bring valid photo identification. Certain types of property or circumstances may require a court order before items can be returned.
