Town of Chapel Hill, NC
Home MenuSeasonal Loose-Leaf Collection
From mid-October through mid-February, the Town of Chapel Hill collects leaves that are piled behind the curbs of residences within Town limits.
Here are some guidelines for participating in the Town’s loose-leaf collection program:
- Pile your leaves behind the curb and not in the street.
- Do not block bike lanes, sidewalks, fire hydrants, mailboxes, storm drains, or water meters.
- Do not put leaves in plastic bags.
- Make sure that your leaf piles have no tree limbs or yard debris (which need to go in a yard trimmings collection cart). Pine straw is fine.
The Town is divided into eight zones for leaf collection, and you can find your zone here. Please check our daily and weekly leaf collection pages for up-to-date schedules and put your leaf piles behind your curb within two weeks of leaf collection crews coming to your neighborhood.
Collected leaves are available to Chapel Hill residents through the Town's free leaf mulch delivery program. The rest of the leaves are used for leaf mulch at Union Grove Farm and JV Brockwell Trucking, Mulch, and Landscaping Supplies. We make sure that no leaves end up in the landfill. Learn more about the benefits of leaf mulch here and consider enjoying some of these benefits yourself by leaving leaves in your yard. You can also compost your leaves or containerize them in a yard trimming collection cart. Please call 919-969-5100 if you would like additional assistance.
