The NC 54 area has been a high priority for the Town for some time. Following several requests from the Town of Chapel Hill and Carrboro (attached) a Corridor Study of this area was completed in 2019 (https://www.townofchapelhill.org/Home/ShowDocument?id=48573) and endorsed by Town of Chapel Hill and Town of Carrboro. The study called for significant improvements at three key locations (Kingswood/Laurel Ridge, Abbey Lane and Westbrook Drive).

The final designs have staged, signalized crossing concepts improving access and making the corridor safer for pedestrians and bicyclists – pedestrians will be able to push a button when ready to cross and traffic will come to a stop. We have secured over $1.5M in funding to implement these crossings. NCDOT anticipates putting this project out to bid in 2024.
