The Town of Chapel Hill is busy with projects to improve your travel safety and convenience – including sidewalks, streets, trails and greenways, traffic calming and more. The Town of Chapel Hill's focus on “complete streets” includes traffic slowing measures, public transit, and safe walkways and bike lanes.

This project will construct bike lanes, sidewalks, and extend the turn lane along Homestead Road from Weaver Dairy Extension to Seawell School Road. The project has a contractor and is set to start construction activities in August. They expect to complete it in Fall of 2024.
Traffic delays and lane closures are expected during this project.

Construction Impacts

The construction associated with the project will require lane closures and delays on Homestead Road.

Phase 1 will have the lowest impact as construction crews move utilities out of the way of the project and focus on the Seawell School Road portion and the south side of Homestead Road near Homestead Village.

Once the project advances to Phase 2, Homestead Road will have the north side closed and flaggers will control traffic as the sidewalk is built from Merin Road to Weaver Dairy Extension.

Traffic will look similar during Phase 3, as the projects constructs the sidewalk and turn lane on the south side from the existing sidewalk to the Carolina North greenway.

The final phase, Phase 4, will have temporary lane closures as the final paving and lane markings are put in place on Homestead Road and Seawell School Road.
