There are many routes you can use to get around Chapel Hill!
By bike:
The Chapel Hill Bike Facilities & Greenways Map includes bike lanes, shared lanes, and trails across both Chapel Hill and Carrboro, along with information on local bike shops, cycling advocacy organizations, and facilities like parking and repair stations.
If you're traveling within Chapel Hill and Carrboro, Chapel Hill Transit offers a full map of its routes, route-specific maps, and real-time information through NextBus. Chapel Hill Transit is a fare-free system, and does not charge riders.
If you're traveling elsewhere in the Triangle, GoTriangle offers a system map for its routes, schedules for all routes from Triangle-area transit agencies, and a trip planner for getting around by transit. One-way trips are $2.25 for local routes and $3 for express routes. You can purchase passes and view fare information on the agency's website.
For sidewalks, you can view a map of existing sidewalks in the Mobility and Connectivity Plan. The town has identified sidewalk gaps that it plans to address in the Mobility and Connectivity Plan, and is working to connect residents on-foot.
The Town is undertaking multiple projects to improve connectivity throughout the community. Chapel Hill voters authorized $16.2 million in bonds funds in 2015 to repair, connect and construct sidewalks and bike lanes to improve connectivity and safety, and $5 million for construction of new trails and greenways. The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining Chapel Hill's roadways and managing traffic. The Streets and Construction team handles maintenance of town streets and snow removal. Chapel Hill's Traffic Engineering team handles issues around traffic signals, streetlight outages, and traffic controls. Chapel Hill's greenway system, comprising 17.6 miles across 11 different trails, is maintained by the Parks and Recreation Department. Additionally, the Transportation Planning Division maintains data on pedestrian and cyclist counts on greenways.
If you have an interest in transportation, you may want to join or attend the meetings of the Transportation and Connectivity Advisory Board. The charge of the Transportation and Connectivity advisory board is to assist the Chapel Hill Town Council in creating an inclusive connected community by recommending, advocating and planning for comprehensive, safe, effective and sustainable multi-modal transportation and connectivity. How does Chapel Hill work with other towns on transportation?
The Town of Chapel Hill is a member agency of the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization (DCHC MPO).
